In Memoriam
In remembrance of Brand X’s beloved percussionist and composer.
1947 – 2010
Remembering Morris Pert, by Percy Jones.
I think it was 1976 when I first met Morris. Morris had been busy on the London scene as a percussion session player. I think that Robin had used him on some of the recordings that he had produced, and suggested we should try him out in Brand X. We all liked his playing so he joined the band as a sideman.
He was very inventive, and his percussion rig looked like a work of art. It was exciting to do bass/percussion duets with him, like the break in “Ghost of Mayfield Lodge”. He was also a very good composer, he was classically trained and was a proficient pianist also.
He always wore a fur coat and gloves on stage. A review in the Melody Maker described him as a “Yeti on speed”. His favourite Scotch was Glenfiddich. We had quite a bit in common, we both came from the provinces, me from rural Wales and Morris from Scotland, and we were almost the same age and had similar tastes in music.
We sometimes had to play on small stages where I would be boxed in between his percussion rig and the drum kit. I would frequently get some mallet hits on the back of my head.
