Phil Collins

Brand X’s seminal drummer

Phil Collins in 1976

Phil Collins joined Brand X as a drummer in the spring of 1975 after John Dillon, a previous drummer working with the yet unnamed band at Island Records, suffered a breakdown and took a leave. Collins’s own lead singer, Peter Gabriel, had just announced his departure from Genesis. Phil Collins had a lot of spare time to jam around London with budding bands when he got a call from Island Records A&R man Danny Wilding; one of Phil’s very own heroes, Bill Bruford, had turned down that same offer, citing his busy schedule. Despite the popular, yet apocryphal notion that Brand X would become “Phil’s other band”, Phil Collins was merely a hire and never an actual member of Brand X on paper. More about the story of Brand X in the band’s “Brand X History” section.
