On July 3rd, 1976, Island Records A&R man Richard Williams, who was a frequent contributing Rock journalist to Britain’s foremost music publication Melody Maker, wrote an editorial detailing his recollections of meeting a promising young bunch of musicians and arriving at the decision so sign them under Island’s umbrella of talents, which included the likes of […]
NOTES FROM THE OTHER WOMAN (When Phil played with Brand X) A few people showed great interest over our website’s ‘historical section’ and its exclusion of Phil Collins as a “core member of Brand X“… Understandably: Phil was hugely consequential since his name alone allowed Brand X to be signed to Hit & Run management […]
Reviving another vintage (April 9, 1977) editorial by Dave Fudger for SOUNDS magazine. I leave the offices of Hit and Run Music and step into Maddox Street W. I have my briefcase over my head, for it is raining. Not the regular, round, wet things that are rain drops, but flat disc-like objects known as […]
Robin Lumley has passed away.
With great sorrow, friends of Brand X learned of the passing of Robin Lumley, composer, maestro keyboardist, friend, and founding member of Brand X.
Robin, who lived in Devon, UK, had been hospitalized scheduled for an operation last week in Derriford, near his home, but passed away suddenly in the afternoon of March 9th, 2023, of heart failure.
This followed an upbeat morning of chatting with nurses who had looked him up on Wikipedia and had started lining up for autographs. Rob, who had been in hospital for a few days was enjoying basking is this worship. He was cheerful. He left this earth a Rock star.
More news about this and other pressing topics will be posted here soon.
Now we turn inward and grieve for our friend.
Robin is survived by his wife Debra and his daughter Jo.
Safe travels, Robin.
Honouring Robin Lumley 1948 -2023
Good evening, and welcome to Brand X...!
This is the Brand X newsletter. Brand X is Percy Jones, Robin Lumley, and our late partner in crime, John Goodsall. On this, our only true and real Brand X home on the web, you can discover Brand X and join the conversation with Percy and Robin. Here we won’t sell you the Brooklyn bridge, or wooden nickels, or even t-shirts. And if we make music available to you, you’ll know it’s with our blessing! Enjoy the only, and first ever Brand X website.
A small trove of well-preserved reel to reel tapes from the vaults has just been rescued by Brand X co-creator Robin Lumley.
Most notable among these are sessions from the band’s earliest recordings in their pre-Charisma days, when Phil Collins joined the jam sessions at Island Records in 1974/75.
We're back to Brand X!
Brand X is John Goodsall, Percy Jones, and Robin Lumley.
This is the real and official website of the British Fusion-Jazz band Brand X & friends,
blessed, approved and sanctified by its surviving members: Robin Lumley and Percy Jones, as well as by the family of John Goodsall.
We shouldn’t have to say this, but we’re living through strange times, so here we go:
This is Brand X. This is the only source of Brand X on the entire Internet, because this website is by the musicians who created Brand X, own Brand X and wrote the music you’ve come to know as Brand X. It’s a good thing you found us because anyone else claiming to be Brand X online is up to something, but they’re not Brand X.
We have only this website: no Twitter account, no Facebook account, no Instagram account, and no You Tube account that says “official”.
Here, you can read pertinent information, stories, and true facts about our work, our music, who created what, who played what, in what key with us, who didn’t impress us much, and who is selling our creations with our blessing. We can tell you all this because we are the real musicians of Brand X — not some flunky in Queens, NY, behind a computer trying to sell you a t-shirt. We hope you’ll enjoy learning about our band, its past, and the present of all its surviving members, and it’s not like you’re going to be able to do THAT anywhere else on the Internet, even if you find people using our name and pretending to be Brand X. There’s nothing to hijack here, because we’re the band. Brand X is our band. This is it! This is our home!
And if we suddenly sound like some greasy PR department, if we shout at you like carnival barkers, or use expressions like “Right-on brother!”, you’ll know the Pod People got to us and have taken over this space too! Anyway, it’s good to be back!
Please come and join us, read a detailed account of our true tales from the front lines of British Rock in the ’70s all the way to the dive bars of Long Beach, and the pubs of Torquay, beyond the years of spin and tall tales that have spread about us. Come learn about our years of whimsy and creation, our hardships and triumphs, and all the music we delighted in bringing our listeners for over four rich decades of being impoverished by the gangsters and grifters of the music business. (You’ll be amazed how much we sound like ourselves when it’s actually us talking to you!)
Hear our (real) recollections of our beloved acolyte John Goodsall, complete with many photographs and stories about his antics throughout the years…
And learn what Percy and Robin are up to, as well as others among the many musical friends we made over the years and who played so many sessions with us: Danny Wilding, Mike Clark, Peter Robinson, Phil Collins, Jack Lancaster, Kenwood Dennard, Preston Heyman, Morris Pert, Kenny Grohowski, John Giblin, Frank Katz, and a few others…
Get acquainted with Brand X, give your support, leave your comments, and most of all, “enjoy Brand X with us!”

What does "Official" mean for Brand X?
There is a simple definition of "Official" when it comes to a band: where we "officiate".
This website is overseen and hosted by the people who created and own Brand X, and exists as the home of our band:
Percy Jones, Robin Lumley and the family of our co-founder John Goodsall.
In addition, we stand with the help of our friends of many years who all played on Brand X albums: Danny Wilding, Kenwood Dennard, Jack Lancaster, & Mike Clark.
Beware of fakes:
This is the only home of Brand X. In recent years, we’ve had to fight accounts on Facebook, You Tube, Instagram, Twitter, and other social media using our name, work and reputation to substitute themselves in our place. Our fans and friends will know how often we’ve had to wrestle our band from the jaws of predators who attempt to take it from us.
When you hear our story, you may come to appreciate why, throughout the years, we’ve endured so much hardship from the music business. And with a little luck, you’ll keep us in your heart and defend us whenever the need arises.
